Aside from a crafting table, you won't use any other utility block more in the early-mid game of Minecraft than a furnace. The furnace is used to smelt items using a fuel source, which creates different items that you might not be able to find anywhere else.

Making a Furnace in Minecraft

A furnace only requires a single crafting ingredient and you can acquire that material within your first few minutes in Minecraft.
